Addressing the Labor Shortage: What Members are Doing to Recruit and Retain Their Workforce

Randy Danielson, President, Retail Construction, Tri-North Builders; Kristen Roodvoets, Construction Project Manager, SmileDirectClub; Ray Catlin, Executive Vice President, Schimenti Construction Company (moderator)
Are you turning away work because you don’t have the human resources to bid on it or staff it once won? You’re not alone. According to Forbes, many skilled worked left the construction industry for other occupations during the 2008-09 Great Recession and the industry suffered a falloff in new hires when it rebounded in the downturn's wake. Our panel will engage in an interactive dialogue about creating a corporate culture where compensation and benefits aren’t the deciding factor on whether to work for or stay at a firm and what recruitment and retention strategies their companies are using to address the shortage.

1:45–3:00pm
Retail of the Future
Sarah Wicker Kimes, Director, Americas, Portland Design
The shopping center of today is constantly evolving, and the demands on real estate developers, property management and tenants are evolving too. Emerging technology, pop-up stores, omnichannel retailers, increased data, along with shifting demographics are challenging the concept of the traditional shopping center, where it is located and it’s mix of tenants. In Retail of the Future, Sarah navigates through these rapids, provides contextual insights, and profiles some of the global trendsetters who are successfully evolving the retail, restaurant and shopping center experience to meet the needs of the all-powerful consumer.
